Abstract:

During the last few years there has been a steady worldwide increase in the demand for fresh herbs. One of the consequences of this trend is the increased consumption of herbs and spices grown in pots. The decorative aspect of these plants has a major influence on their marketability. Various aspects of propagation and production of potted aromatic plants will be presented and discussed. Among these:

  • propagation methods
  • the use of growth regulators in order to promote branching
  • the effect of various media and cultural factors on growth rate and on keeping quality during shipment and on regenerative ability under conditions prevailing at the consumer's home

Four species of the Labiateae as well as Laurus nobilis (Lauraceae) served as plant material for these experiments.
