A procedure is suggested for optimizing N fertigation, based on the prediction of root density distribution in the soil. Because of difficulties in predicting this function, empirical relationships correlated with high tomato yield are presented. They include N uptake and dry matter production versus time curves, root density distribution in the soil under fertigation, and Michaelis-Menten N uptake-related parameters.
