Acetaldehyde (Aa), a naturally occurring volatile compound, killed Myzus persicae (Sulzer) on harvested head lettuce Lactuca sativa L. without injuring the commodity.
Vapors of Aa at 0.25% caused 100% mortality to aphids during a 2-h exposure. When lettuce heads were infested with aphids, a higher concentration of Aa and a longer exposure (2.0% for 3 h) were required to cause 100% mortality than when the aphids were fumigated alone.
