The respiratory rate was higher in lemon fruit infected with Phytophthora citrophthora than in uninfected fruit, reaching a maximum (51 to 69 mg CO2/kg per hr) 2 days after the initial appearance of decay lesions, and thereafter decreasing until the fruit was decayed completely. In uninfected fruit, the respiration was low (5 to 6 mg CO2/kg per hr) and constant.
