Spread of Phytophthora citrophthora infection of Valencia oranges and Marsh Seedless grapefruits during storage and shipment was reduced by post-harvest treatment in which 2000 mu g/ml metalaxyl was incorporated in the wax coating. Metalaxyl with or without 4000 mu g/ml thiabendazole did not control Penicillium digitatum and P. italicum owing to resistant strains. With imazalil (2000 mu g/ml) incorporation a few fruits rotted with Penicillium spp., Geotrichum candidum and Alternaria citri. However, with the incorporation of Sonax (etaconazole) at 2000 mu g/ml most fungi were controlled. Wrapping paper impregnated with 2000, 5000 or 10 000 mu g/ml metalaxyl prevented the spread of P. citrophthora but the other fungi continued to spread.
