Abstract:
Vernalized Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris subsp. pekinensis) plants were subjected to LD (16 h) obtained by extending the natural day-length with artificial illumination. Time to the beginning of bolting was increased, and flower stem length and flowering intensity were decreased with the reduction in intensity of the supplementary light. Incandescent light (IL) caused more bolting and flowering than fluorescent light (FL) of similar intensity. Plants of the slow-bolter cultivar 'Spring A' responded to the supplementary IL of high intensity in a similar way to the fast-bolter 'Pagoda' illuminated with the same type of light but of lower intensity. It is concluded that after vernalization, Chinese cabbage plants respond to day-length like typical qualitative LD-plants. © 1988.
