Abstract:
The spatial distribution of land cover types affects the suitability of an area to wildlife species. Modification of cover types can be used to achieve a prescribed wildlife response. A nonlinear programming model was developed for the design of a cost-effective plan of cover type modification. The planning is a two-stage process. The objective of the first stage is to determine the maximum achievable weighted sum of habitat units for all species considered. At the second stage the model is solved for this target value while minimizing the cost of cover type modification. Linkage to a geographic information system provides the model with the necessary spatial input data.
