The description is given of the adult female of Andaspis formicarum a new species of armoured scale insects from East London, South Africa. This diaspidid was discovered to develop in association with ants belonging to a species of Melissotarsus within the ants' galleries in the twigs of Ficus trees. A speculative discussion is presented on the nature of the association of diaspidids with ants. © 1978 Masson.
