Abstract:
During the rainy season, the biomass of the herbaceous stratum in unshaded coffee systems (sun system) and in control systems (plots with no coffee, shade trees or other crop) grows at a faster rate than that in monogeneric shade (with shade trees of the genus Inga) and polygeneric shade (with trees from the genera Inga, Musa and Citrus) coffee systems. The final weed biomass at the end of the rainy season in the unshaded coffee and control systems was more than twice that of shaded coffee agroecosystems. The final weed biomass in both shaded systems was similar. This same pattern occurred during the dry season-except that weeds started to germinate and accumulate dry matter only after onset of the first rains. The weed community in unshaded coffee and control systems was dominated by herbaceous Compositae. The herbaceous stratum in both shaded coffee systems was dominated by Commelinaceae. -from Authors
