Abstract:
Laboratory and field trials with fruits treated with the processed kaolin 'Surround WP' in nectarines, in apples and in persimmons indicated an almost complete protection against infestations of the Mediterranean fruit fly (medfly), Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae). In laboratory trials with 'Sunsnow' nectarines, in a choice and no choice tests, female flies avoided landing on treated fruits and no infestations resulted. In field trials against heavy infestations on 'Gala' apples, 'Flamekist' nectarines and 'Triumph' persimmons practically clean fruits were obtained in the processed kaolin sprayed trees. The promising results of these experiments point to the feasibility of using particle film technology composed of a non-toxic material, to avoid medfly damage as an alternative to intensive applications of insecticides presently used in commercial plantations as well as in organic orchards which still lack effective treatment against this pest.
