Abstract:
A Finn × Merino and Finn × Awassi flock was exposed to three four-week mating periods per year, viz. June and December-January (which are transient periods between seasonal anoestrus and cyclic activity), and September (which is the peak season of cyclic activity). During the 30-month observation period, 177 ewes passed through the flock, totalling 3821 ewe-months, including ewes which were culled or died. The average number of ewe-months per lambing was 9.2. The percentage of lambings (number of lambings divided by number of scheduled matings) was 74.2. 73.6% of consecutive lambings succeeded a previous lambing that occurred at the scheduled time. The lambing percentages from September, December-January and June matings were 83.8, 81.9 and 58.6 (P < 0.01), respectively. © 1985.
