Hydrolysis and decomposition of M-hectorite in dilute solutions of M-chlorides (M = Na, Li, Mg or Ca) has been studied by chemical analysis and electrical conductivity determinations. Al-free hectorite appears a good model for studying the mechanism of M+-smectite hydrolysis in dilute salt solution. -D.F.B.
