Abstract:
Agricultural Biotechnology (AgBiotech) in Israel is an old art and technology. Our ancestors mastered the technology of fermentation of beer, wine, cheese and bread and perhaps other products. Modern biotechnology in Israel started with Prof. Ch. Weizmann who developed the fermentation of acetone in the second decade of this century, Re-cently technologies for micropropagation of plant crop species were developed in the Volcani Center and in the Hebrew University and soon passed on to the private industries: Rahan Nurseries, Beit Haemek Laboratories, Ginosar Nurseries, Bikel Biotech, Ben-Zur, Danziger Nurseries, Hishtil, and Osmotech are among the leading firms. Automation of micropropagation was recently developed by Vitrostar and Osmotech as joint venture with the Volcani Center and the Hebrew University scientists. Among the crop species which are propagated on a large scale are: banana, apple, strawberry, potato, ornamentals and others. The propagation materials are of elite quality, which means disease free and horticulturally tested. © 1995 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
