Abstract:
The work on Natural Language in Technical Information Systems (NLTIS) was intended to be done together with DAF and concerned a potential DAF application, namely the handling of information about (obsolete) spare parts. The work on natural language was intended to show that the performance of the distribution chain running from supplier via area and local distributors to the workshops, can be improved by increasing the accessibility of available (technical) information, concentrating on the critical success factor: 'service', in particular for After-market Operations. It is presently impossible to use central databases because of the technical know-how required from the end-user, the volume of data to be transported, e.g. for drawings, and because indexing is not performed automatically, so the user has to know or find his way through the whole sea of data.
