Infection of cucumber seedlings by cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) caused retardation of hypocotyl elongation. This was found to correspond with an enhanced production of ethylene in infected hypocotyls. The elongation of hypocotyls of infected and healthy seedlings was also retarded by exogenously introduced ethylene or by treatment with ethephon. However, reducing the ethylene content by absorption with KMnO4 increased hypocotyl elongation of CMV-infected seedlings only during the first 48 h after inoculation, while it enhanced elongation of the healthy controls for 8 days. © 1976.
