Abstract

Ovum Pick Up (OPU) is possible in Israel only during winter time when oocytes quality enables embryo production. During this period many cows are pregnant and thus OPU has to be tried out on them. A dominant difference in oocytes and embryo quality was monitored in this project: The average number of good quality (grade I + II) oocytes per aspiration cycle from pregnant cows (n=5) was similar (3.8) as in the control group (4.4) (n=5), though in pregnant cows only the contra lateral ovary to the one carrying the Corpus Luteum was aspirated. The yield of good quality oocytes was higher (81.4%) in pregnant cows than in the control group (68.6%). First cleavage rate for oocytes from pregnant cows was 66.6% and in control 55.5%. Blastocyst formation rate was 38% for pregnant cows oocytes and 19.3% for the control group.

An outstanding OPU case report for a pregnant cow showed the average yield of 46 good quality oocytes per OPU cycle when both ovaries were aspirated, an average number of 35.6 good quality oocytes per cycle, 50% of them reached first cleavage and 33% of them grew to the blastocyst stage. No difficulties were monitored in pregnancies and births of OPU treated animals. When we tried to imitate high progesterone levels known in prgnant cows by giving to cows (n=6) a synthetic form called Norgestomet during heat stress in summer period, we failed to show any improvement of any of the above categories.
