Abstract:

The development of the fruit of the peach cultivar ‘Ventura’ was investigated by anatomical studies of weekly samples from full bloom to ripening.
The duration of the various developmental stages was determined. Stage I, rapid pericarp growth, was relatively short and lasted only 35 days; stage II, the period of retarded pericarp growth, lasted 14 days; and stage III, renewed rapid pericarp growth, lasted 51 days.
Development of integuments and nucellus was continuous; they reached their maximum size at the end of 9 weeks after full bloom.
The endosperm started dividing approximately 13 days after full bloom, remained free nuclear until the 5th week, and was fully cellular by the end of the 6th week. By the 11th week it had reached maximum size.
Embryo development was very slow until the 7th week. It was a flat structure until the 5th week, when it became spherical.
Cotyledons formed in the 8th week and reached maximum size 12 weeks after full bloom.
