Abstract:

The effect of potassium concentration on growth was tested on callus of two apple clones, M-XVI and 3,430, in vitro Both clones produced optimal growth at a concentration of 140 μg K/milliliter medium Concentrations lower than 56 μg/milliliter enabled considerably less growth, potassium uptake, and peroxidase activity High potassium concentrations in the media induced increased potassium uptake and peroxidase activity, accompanied by a reduction in growth The rates of growth and potassium uptake are specific for each clone and show opposite relations. General peroxidase activity was low in the vigorous M-XVI clone. No significant difference in peroxidase isozyme composition could be found with the various potassium concentrations or the resulting vigor of growth.
