These vegetation communities are not only well adapted to heavy grazing, but low grazing pressure can have undesirable ecological and management consequences. It is suggested that a new approach to management of Mediterranean Basin rangelands should take into account the special characteristics of the vegetation and the rangeland habitats, the specific human and biological history of the region, and the changing socio-economic environment.
