Olives originated in the Middle East and have been commercially planted in vast areas of the Negev Desert; however, water quality can be a factor in olive crops. Research using variable quantities of a range of saline water has demonstrated that leaching can occur in the root zone and produce high-yielding and good quality olives for table consumption and oil production.
