Abstract:

Anaerobic treatment of domestic wastewater is an attractive option for secondary wastewater
treatment. The high costs of aeration and sludge handling associated with aerobic sewage
treatment are significantly lower as no oxygen is needed and the production of sludge is 3–
20 times lower. In addition, greenhouse gas emissions during anaerobic treatment are lower
relative to aerobic technologies, provided that the methane produced is used as an energy
