Abstract:

In spite of their great advantages, anaerobic reactors hardly produce effluents that comply
with usual discharge standards established by environmental agencies, Table 8.1 (WHO,
2006). Therefore, the anaerobic reactors need an upgrading (effluent post treatment and/or
reactor modification in design) as a means to adapt the treated effluent to the requirements
of the environmental legislation (for irrigation or water disposal) and protect the receiving
