Abstract:

Medicinal plants are used for tissue culture for producing active compounds efficaciously for pharmaceutical industries. Several studies were carried out on medicinal plants for their preservation and efficient production of secondary metabolites, and they have many applications in pharmaceutical industries due to their therapeutic properties against microbial infection, inflammation, and cancer. The production of secondary metabolites was done conventionally by the cultivation of plants at a huge level which requires greater areas of land, and the major drawbacks of this method are that the entire economically important plants cannot survive in an environmental condition other than their natural habitat; besides this, the plants are also exposed to the pathogen attack and other stress factors occurs in the environment. Thus tissue culture techniques have proved beneficial to eliminate these issues for the production of secondary metabolites. This chapter discusses how new biotechnological tools like plant tissue culture, metabolic engineering, and transgenic plant production contribute to the field of pharmaceutical science.
