Microviscosity, η and fusion energy, ΔE, in the lipid core of intact human erythrocyte membranes, their ghost membranes and in liposomes prepared from their lipid extracts were determined between 0 and 40°C by a fluorescence-polarization technique which was previously utilized for similar purposes. All three systems possess ΔE = 7 kcal/mole but the η value in the ghost membrane is greater by 50% than that of the intact cell and is similar to that found in the liposomes. © 1974.
