Abstract:
The results of a field experiment are reported in which kerosene, a petroleum product containing more than 100 hydrocarbons, was applied to the soil surface and affected by soil amendment. The soil was leached for 100 days with a total of 650 mm rain and irrigation. The treatments studied comprised a non-amended soil, soil amended with sludge and soil amended with a mixture of phosphate, nitrate and potassium fertilizers. It was observed that both the amendments applied to the soil surface immediately after the kerosene spill enhanced the pollutant attenuation during the period studied. This behaviour indicates an increase in the biodegradation in soil as result of energy sources supplied by both amendments studied. The dynamics of the total kerosene and of the kerosene components' weathering and redistribution in the soil subsurface to a depth of 100 cm during leaching as affected by the applied amendments are presented and discussed.
