The influence of the irrigation regime, quality of irrigation water and climatic conditions on the soil water and salt balance and the resulting crop yield is attracting considerable attention. Due to the complexity of the system and the large number of variables involved, research results from laboratory, greenhouse and field experiments are rather fragmentary. Considerable controversy exists concerning the best for controlling the salinity level of the soil. Research to cover all possible combinations influencing the system would require an endless and for the most part, unnecessary series of experiments.
